GOOGLE HACKS DOWN 22 MORE CHROME EXTENSIONS IMPERSONATING RENOWNED CRYPTO WALLETS

Google has continued its fight against malicious chrome extensions impersonating popular cryptocurrency wallet services notably Ledger and Metamask. The existence of criminal activities in the cryptosphere cannot be overstressed as new scam activities keep invading the space without recourse to brand reputation. This recent mass cleaning comes after about a month when Google took down about 50 similar fake extensions as reported by Sophos.

Sophos, on Friday through Naked Security, the firm’s news site reported the recent mass deactivation of these additional extensions as identified by Harry Denley, a security researcher at the wallet service MyCrypto. Denley in his research on these extensions discovered that these extensions were claiming to be affiliated with Trezor, Electroneum, MyEtherWallet, Ledger and Metamask and these extensions mostly offer user experiences that appear similar to the original site it is impersonating. These fake extensions provide this perfect camouflage to trick unsuspecting users into giving up their private keys and mnemonic phrases.

The more sophisticated the blockchain technology grows to be, the likelihood of more scam sites to spring up. The duty of such big corporations as Google remains to help in occasional cleaning of their sites to help in keeping user’s confidence in the cryptosphere. As noted by Tenable, scammers have always been impersonating popular cryptocurrency figures including the U.S President Donald Trump and Tesla’s Elon Musk, the two most popular figures in these scandalous stunts. These grande impersonation schemes most times were disguised as free giveaways and in addition, to support the presence of these impersonation accounts and create a sense of legitimacy, scammers are leveraging other accounts to falsify social proof.

The obvious truth is that fraud and scams in the cryptosphere are inimical to a sustained trust in the impeccable drive to create new world order by cryptocurrencies and blockchain-backed innovations and all technologically empowered outfits must join in the fight to change the scandalous narrative
