Neogen Corporation, a global food safety company, has teamed up with Ripe Technology (ripe.io), a pioneer blockchain provider in the food industry, for blockchain-driven solutions in animal genomics and food safety diagnostics. Expressly, Neogen offers test kits, as well as relevant items needed in the detection of dangerous products in food. 

Blockchain deployment in animal genomics and food safety

Through the partnership, Ripe Technology will provide a blockchain platform to be used by Neogen to store test data carried out on an animal or food product. For example, a dairy cow’s genomic profile will be linked to the feed it consumes, the quality and quantity of milk it generates, barn environment, and medical history using distributed ledgers. 

Neogen’s CEO, John Adent, ascertained, “Blockchain has tremendous potential throughout the food and livestock industries, both to verify the authenticity of premium products, such as cage-free eggs, and enhance the traceability of issues that require correction, such as those that lead to product recalls.”

He added, “Blockchain technology has a lot to offer both our food safety diagnostic and animal genomic customers, as the technology permanently connects a tremendous amount of potentially critical data, including results from Neogen's tests, to a food product or animal. There are countless potential benefits to adopting the technology.”

By storing an animal’s DNA information and food safety diagnostics on a blockchain system, the optimal degree of factual correctness and transparency can be attained when it comes to validating food recalls. 

The CEO of Ripe Technology, Raja Ramachandran, stated, “We are extremely excited that Neogen selected us as their blockchain and ledger technology partner. […] We believe this will change the game in food transparency for improved quality assessment from the beginning of the supply chain all the way to consumers.”

By leveraging on blockchain technology, customers will be able to monitor and scrutinize food risk data based on the diagnostics undertaken. Additionally, the automation of food safety workflows will be prompted.
