AI Voice Technology Aids Educator Ed Riefenstahl in Overcoming Speech Challenges

Ed Riefenstahl, Director of Experiential Learning at TCU's Neeley School of Business, has embraced AI voice technology to continue his teaching career despite a debilitating medical condition. According to ElevenLabs, Riefenstahl suffered a traumatic brain injury in 2021, leading to a diagnosis of bulbar palsy, a condition that impairs speech and swallowing.

Challenges in Communication

By 2023, Riefenstahl's ability to communicate had declined significantly, making his teaching role increasingly difficult. The condition, which has no cure, posed a significant barrier to his professional and personal life. In search of a solution, Riefenstahl reached out to ElevenLabs after learning about their AI voice tools through a press release by Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton, who also uses the technology to manage speech issues.

Restoring a Voice

ElevenLabs utilized recordings of Riefenstahl's pre-injury voice to develop a custom voice clone that mirrors his original cadence and tone. By August 2023, Riefenstahl was able to hear his replicated voice, a moment he described as regaining a part of his identity. This technological intervention has allowed him to reconnect with his students, maintaining the familiar rapport he had established before his injury.
