Aglive, an Australian-based blockchain platform, has set a milestone in the nation’s beef industry by successfully enabling beef traceability from Australia to China in conjunction with DB Schenker, a global shipping logistics company. This venture was supported by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA), a public authority mandated with the identification and traceability of Australian livestock.

Notable breakthrough

The trial of this project started in late January, and it entailed the integration of blockchain-enabled monitoring with internet-of-things (IoT) capabilities in tracking cattle from Macka’s farm located in North South Wales (NSW), an east coast Australian state, to a local abattoir.

Aglive has been able to trail the frozen beef products to ascertain that they adhere to safety measures when being transported by land freight to Brisbane, an Australian city, and later on shipped to Shanghai, China.

This blockchain platform is powered by an electronic National Vendor Declaration (eNVD) app that merges management data with farm accreditation.

Paul Ryan, Aglive executive director, noted, “In light of coronavirus, strengthening the connection between Australian farming and food has never been more important. We are now living in a world where food fraud and related health risks are becoming a growing problem caused by lack of data and traceability, so we must work together to restore consumer trust.”

Additionally, Craig Davison of DB Schenker Australia acknowledged, “We are proud to have partnered with Aglive in this revolutionary trial, which will pave the way in transforming Australia's livestock industry to become more transparent, efficient and profitable.”

Utilizing a unique QR for every item, brand owners and farmers incorporated into the blockchain platform will have the opportunity to track their shipments as they traverse the supply chain.

Blockchain offers hope following Australian bushfires

The 2019-2020 season of the Australian bushfires called the Black Summer wreaked havoc as it destroyed millions of acres of land. The Bitcoin community, however, came in handy in helping tame these wildfires through donations.

Blockchain technology is offering hope to the nation’s farming industry as it seeks to stand on its feet following these devastating bushfires.

Macka, the owner of Macka’s Farm, stipulated, “The recent bushfires have seen the Australian farming industry go through the toughest time in its history. It's reassuring to know there is technology out there that can help us get back on our feet, as consumers are willing to pay a premium for Australian products they know they can trust.”

Blockchain is being viewed as the icing on the cake in many industries across the globe. For instance, leading fast-food chain, KFC recently opted for blockchain-enabled media buying and digital advertisements for its Middle East customers.
