The latest report from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis unveils significant trends in the realm of cryptocurrency-based crime for the year 2025. As digital currencies continue to gain mainstream acceptance, the scope and sophistication of illicit activities have expanded, according to Chainalysis.

Illicit Cryptocurrency Activity in 2024

Chainalysis reports a downward trend in the value received by illicit cryptocurrency addresses in 2024, totaling $40.9 billion. However, this figure is expected to rise as more illicit addresses are identified. A historical analysis indicates that the estimated volume of illicit activity could exceed $51 billion, marking a potential increase from the previous year's adjusted figure of $46.1 billion.

While the percentage of total on-chain transaction volume associated with illicit activity has decreased from 0.61% in 2023 to 0.14% in 2024, Chainalysis warns that these figures may grow as data attribution improves.

Emerging Trends in Crypto Crime

Stablecoins have overtaken Bitcoin (BTC) as the preferred cryptocurrency for illicit transactions, comprising 63% of all illicit activity. This shift reflects a broader trend in the crypto ecosystem where stablecoins are increasingly used for legitimate purposes like remittances and international trade.

Despite this diversification, certain types of crypto crime, including ransomware and darknet market sales, remain predominantly Bitcoin-driven. Chainalysis highlights that North Korean hackers have been notably active, accounting for $1.34 billion in stolen funds, primarily targeting decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms.

Professionalization of Illicit Networks

The report underscores the increasing professionalization of illicit networks, with entities like Huione Guarantee providing infrastructure for a wide array of criminal activities. These services support scams, laundering operations, and other illicit activities, facilitating transactions worth over $70 billion since 2021.

Chainalysis continues to refine its methodologies to detect and disrupt these evolving threats. The introduction of 'Signals' data has enabled more precise identification of suspected illicit activities, enhancing the accuracy of their crime estimates.

Conclusion

The 2025 report by Chainalysis presents a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of cryptocurrency crime. As illicit actors diversify their methods and leverage cryptocurrencies for traditional crimes, the need for advanced detection and prevention strategies becomes increasingly critical.
