The Cronos (CRO) EVM v1.4.0 'Pallene' upgrade proposal has been officially announced, marking a significant advancement in the network's transaction processing capabilities, according to Cronos Labs. This proposal is currently open for discussion on the Cronos EVM governance forum, as the developers aim to incorporate community feedback into its implementation.

Enhancing Transaction Processing

The Pallene upgrade introduces groundbreaking features designed to massively increase transaction throughput. One of the key innovations is parallel transaction processing, which, coupled with optimistic execution, enables the virtual machine to handle tens of thousands of transactions per second, a dramatic increase from the current capability of up to 100 TPS.

The shift towards parallel processing aligns with recent trends observed among Layer 1 networks, positioning Cronos EVM for future scalability as the Web3 industry continues to expand. However, to achieve this high transaction throughput live, certain conditions must be met, including adjusting the block interval time and increasing transaction volume to ensure economic viability for network validators.

Innovative Features and Improvements

The Cronos EVM Pallene upgrade leverages the latest innovations from the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT (formerly Tendermint), optimizing these technologies to enhance network performance. A notable feature is Block-STM, which facilitates concurrent transaction processing within each block, significantly boosting throughput and reducing latency by resolving transaction conflicts efficiently.

Additionally, the upgrade includes a new benchmarking framework, allowing developers to measure performance improvements across different environments. Initial tests have demonstrated the potential to execute up to 60,000 transactions per second under optimal conditions.

Network Efficiency and SDK Enhancements

Significant efforts have been made to reduce network overhead, including refining the EVM message format and optimizing the Ethermint ante handler. These changes streamline transaction encoding and decoding processes, improve caching for signature checks, and enhance fee and gas validation, collectively boosting network speed and efficiency.

The upgrade also introduces custom enhancements to the Cosmos SDK and CometBFT layers, such as storing Golang objects directly to reduce computational costs and enabling asynchronous event firing to offload work from the block commit process, thereby improving block processing times.
