Crypto Narratives in 2024: AI and Memecoins Lead with Remarkable Returns
The year 2024 has proven to be a dynamic period for cryptocurrency narratives, with AI and Memecoin narratives taking center stage by delivering exceptional returns, as reported by CoinGecko. The AI narrative emerged as the top performer with a staggering year-to-date (YTD) return of 2,939.8%, closely followed by the Memecoin narrative, which achieved a return of 2,185.1%.
AI and Memecoin Narratives Outshine Others
The surge in AI-related crypto projects, particularly the Virtuals Protocol, significantly contributed to the AI narrative's success. This narrative witnessed a year-end rally, doubling its returns from 1,598.1% to 2,939.8% in December. Meanwhile, Memecoins experienced a meteoric rise in March, with returns skyrocketing from 96.6% to 1,713.1% within a month. Despite reaching a peak return of 3,211.4% in early December, Memecoins saw a slight decline as interest began to wane.
RWA and Other Narratives
Real-World Assets (RWA) ranked third in profitability with an average return of 819.5% YTD. The RWA narrative showed steady growth, particularly in November, driven by a price spike in MANTRA (OM). In contrast, narratives such as Layer 1, DePIN, and DeFi posted modest returns of 142.5%, 135.4%, and 101.4% respectively. Notably, Bitcoin's 125.5% return outperformed the DeFi narrative, highlighting its resilience in the market.
Underperforming Narratives
GameFi and Layer 2 narratives lagged behind in 2024. The GameFi sector recorded a mere 14.7% return, with significant losses observed in six of the top ten gaming tokens. Layer 2 projects faced challenges, posting a negative return of 20.7%, as seven of its top tokens saw price drops amid a trend of launching independent Layer 2 solutions.
