Crypto Thefts Reach $2.2 Billion in 2024 Amid Stagnant Hack Volumes

James Ding   Dec 19, 2024 10:47 0 Min Read

The year 2024 witnessed a significant rise in crypto thefts, with a staggering $2.2 billion stolen, according to Chainalysis. This marks a 21.07% increase from 2023, highlighting the persistent threat of crypto hacking as adoption and prices continue to rise. Despite the increase in stolen funds, the volume of hacking incidents showed signs of stagnation, with 303 incidents recorded in 2024, up from 282 in 2023.

Changing Dynamics in Crypto Hacking

The first half of 2024 saw a surge in crypto thefts, with $1.58 billion stolen by July, an 84.4% increase from the same period in 2023. However, the upward trend plateaued in the latter half of the year. A potential geopolitical factor, such as the mid-year summit between Russia and North Korea, might have influenced this change.

Target Shift from DeFi to Centralized Services

Decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms have been consistent targets in past years due to their rapid growth focus over security. However, in 2024, centralized services became more prominent targets in Q2 and Q3. Notable hacks included the DMM Bitcoin hack in May, resulting in a $305 million loss, and the WazirX hack in July, with $234.9 million stolen.

North Korean Hackers Intensify Attacks

North Korean hackers significantly increased their activities, stealing $1.34 billion across 47 incidents in 2024, a 102.88% increase from 2023. These attacks accounted for 61% of the total stolen amount for the year. The DPRK's cyber operations are believed to fund state-sponsored programs, including weapons development.

Importance of Enhanced Security Measures

The rise in crypto thefts underscores the urgent need for improved security measures. The industry must address vulnerabilities, particularly those related to private key management, which accounted for 43.8% of stolen crypto in 2024. Collaborative efforts between public and private sectors, along with advanced predictive technologies, are crucial in fortifying defenses.

Chainalysis, known for its blockchain analysis tools, recently acquired Hexagate, a Web3 security solutions provider. Hexagate's machine learning models proactively detect and mitigate threats, offering a promising solution to combat cyber exploits before they occur.
