Ethereum ETF Launch Sees $2.2B Inflows Amid Mixed Digital Asset Fund Flows
The recent launch of a US-based Ethereum (ETH) ETF saw substantial inflows amounting to $2.2 billion, according to CoinShares' latest Digital Asset Fund Flows Weekly Report. However, these gains were somewhat overshadowed by significant incumbent selling.
Mixed Inflows for Digital Assets
Digital asset investment products experienced a relatively modest $245 million in inflows over the past week. This figure masks a varied performance among different digital assets. Notably, Bitcoin (BTC) continued to attract investor interest, recording healthy inflows of $519 million. This brings Bitcoin's month-to-date inflows to $3.6 billion and year-to-date (YTD) inflows to a record $19 billion.
Ethereum ETF Launch
The launch of the US spot-based Ethereum ETFs marked one of the largest inflows since December 2020. Newly issued ETFs saw $2.2 billion in inflows, while trading volumes in Ethereum Exchange-Traded Products (ETPs) surged by 542%. Despite these positive figures, the overall net inflow was affected by outflows from incumbent ETFs. Grayscale, for instance, seeded its new Mini Trust ETF with capital from its existing closed-end trust, contributing to a net outflow of $285 million last week.
Overall Market Dynamics
Trading volumes in digital assets rose to $14.8 billion for the week, the highest since May. The recent price appreciation has driven total assets under management (AuM) to $99.1 billion, with total YTD inflows reaching a record-breaking $20.5 billion.
The report suggests that renewed investor confidence in Bitcoin may be influenced by US electioneering comments positioning Bitcoin as a potential strategic reserve asset, as well as the increased likelihood of a Federal Reserve rate cut in September 2024.
Grayscale's Role
Grayscale's activity plays a significant role in the market dynamics. The firm seeded its new Mini Trust ETF with approximately $1 billion from its incumbent closed-end trust. This move has been linked to the steady stream of outflows observed in recent years. In the past week alone, Grayscale's incumbent trust saw outflows of $1.5 billion, mirroring the situation observed during the Bitcoin trust outflows at the January 2024 ETF launches.
