Google has rolled out a significant update to NotebookLM, its AI-powered research and note-taking assistant, originally launched in 2023 as Project Tailwind. The June 8, 2026, upgrade introduces Gemini 3.5 as the default AI model, expanded web research capabilities, and native code execution, pushing NotebookLM further into the realm of professional and educational use cases.

Advanced AI Models and Enhanced Research Tools

The transition to Gemini 3.5 improves the platform’s accuracy, reasoning, and transparency. According to Google, the upgraded system achieved a 69.9% win rate in large document analysis and a 78.2% win rate in advanced web research during side-by-side evaluations against its predecessor.

A major new feature is native code execution, enabling users to perform complex data analysis directly within the platform. NotebookLM now includes more than 100 curated software skills, designed to help users uncover deeper insights from their documents. It also integrates Google Search to proactively gather relevant sources, eliminating the need for manual uploads—a game-changer for researchers starting with loose ideas or incomplete datasets.

Expanded Output Formats for Customization

NotebookLM now supports a broader range of output formats, catering to diverse professional needs. Users can generate PDFs with charts and tables, detailed spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and even structured data formats like JSON and CSV. These outputs can be further customized and edited, streamlining workflows for data analysts, educators, and small business owners alike.

This flexibility positions NotebookLM as a versatile tool for both personal and enterprise use. For instance, data analysts can combine datasets with conflicting formats and use NotebookLM to generate polished reports, while small business owners can analyze raw sales data and create presentations to guide expansion decisions.

Proactive Research Assistance

Another key update is NotebookLM’s ability to proactively assist with research. Users can now start projects with minimal input, as the AI suggests and builds a source repository in real-time. This feature is particularly valuable for multilingual research, as it can identify primary sources in different languages and provide attribution for all materials added to the notebook.

Targeting Education and Enterprise

Since its launch, NotebookLM has been steadily evolving from a document summarizer to a comprehensive AI workspace. The latest updates enhance its appeal for educational and enterprise users, offering tools like flashcards, quizzes, and customizable study guides. With its integration into Google’s Gemini ecosystem, NotebookLM is increasingly being positioned as a cornerstone of professional knowledge management.

The updates are now available globally for users with Google AI Ultra and Workspace business accounts. Free-tier users can also access the platform, albeit with more limited functionality.

What’s Next?

Google’s June 2026 upgrade significantly broadens NotebookLM’s capabilities, particularly for professionals handling complex research projects or vast datasets. As AI adoption accelerates across industries, NotebookLM’s enhanced tools could capture a larger share of the enterprise and education markets. Future updates are expected to add even more output formats and features, further cementing its role as a go-to resource for AI-driven research and productivity.
