The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a critical alert to the public concerning a fraudulent mobile application purportedly associated with Bank of Communications (Hong Kong) Limited. The alert comes after reports were made to the HKMA about the app's deceptive nature.

Fraudulent App Details

According to the HKMA, the fraudulent app has been misleading users by posing as an official banking platform. The authority has emphasized that banks, including the Bank of Communications, do not send SMS or emails with embedded hyperlinks directing users to perform transactions on their websites. Moreover, legitimate banks will never request sensitive personal information, such as login details or one-time passwords, via phone, email, or SMS.

Public Advisory

The HKMA urges anyone who has interacted with the fraudulent app, especially those who have provided personal information or conducted financial transactions through it, to contact the concerned bank immediately using the official contact details provided in the bank's press release. Additionally, individuals are advised to report such incidents to the Hong Kong Police Force's Crime Wing Information Centre at 2860 5012.

HKMA's Continued Vigilance

This alert underscores the HKMA's ongoing efforts to protect consumers from cyber threats and fraudulent schemes. The authority maintains a dedicated section on its website for consumer awareness, where the public can find resources and information on how to identify and avoid scams.
