HKMA Issues Alert on Fraudulent HSBC Website and Phishing Messages
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has issued a warning to the public regarding a fraudulent website and phishing instant messages associated with The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC). According to the HKMA, these fraudulent activities have been reported and are currently under investigation.
Fraudulent Activities Identified
The HKMA highlighted that the fraudulent website and phishing messages aim to deceive individuals into providing sensitive personal information. The authority emphasized that banks, including HSBC, will never send SMS or emails containing embedded hyperlinks that direct users to their websites for transaction purposes. Furthermore, banks will not request login passwords, One-Time Passwords, or other sensitive personal information through phone, email, or SMS, including links within these messages.
Public Advised to Exercise Caution
The HKMA advises anyone who has shared personal information or conducted financial transactions in response to the fraudulent website or phishing messages to contact HSBC immediately using the contact details provided in the official press release. Additionally, affected individuals should report the incident to the Crime Wing Information Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force at 2860 5012.
