HKMA Launches GenA.I. Sandbox with First Cohort of Participants

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA), in collaboration with the Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited, has unveiled the inaugural cohort for its Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenA.I.) Sandbox. This initiative aims to explore the potential of generative AI in the financial sector, according to a recent announcement by the HKMA.

Selection and Objectives

From over 40 proposals, 15 use cases were chosen, representing 10 banks and four technology partners. The selection committee, comprising academic and industry experts, prioritized proposals based on innovation, technical sophistication, and industry contribution. The chosen projects primarily focus on enhancing risk management, anti-fraud measures, and customer experience.

Technological Exploration

The GenA.I. Sandbox will allow banks to explore AI's capacity to process large volumes of documents and unstructured data, and handle cross-media inputs and outputs. This includes improvements in credit assessment and fraud detection through automated data processing, and advanced customer service capabilities beyond conventional chatbots.

Implementation and Support

Participants will be integrated into the Artificial Intelligence Supercomputing Centre managed by Cyberport, with trials beginning in early 2025 and continuing through mid-2025. The HKMA and Cyberport will offer supervisory and technical support throughout the process, aiming to derive insights and share best practices with the industry.

Future Prospects

The HKMA plans to open applications for the second cohort by the end of Q1 2025. Insights from the initial cohort will be shared to aid in the development of future trial use cases. Deputy Chief Executive of the HKMA, Mr. Arthur Yuen, expressed enthusiasm about the banking sector's interest in generative AI and the potential for innovative developments within the sandbox environment.
