Together AI has unveiled an innovative approach called Minions, designed to shift a significant portion of large language model (LLM) workloads from the cloud to consumer devices. This strategy aims to reduce cloud computing costs without compromising on quality, according to Together AI.

Leveraging Local Devices

Minions propose the use of small on-device models that work in tandem with more advanced cloud models. By processing long contexts locally, this method reduces the reliance on costly cloud services. The initiative envisions a future where a persistent “intelligence layer” operates on devices such as laptops and smartphones, enhancing the efficiency of applications while remaining cost-effective.

Challenges and Improvements

The initial implementation of Minions demonstrated promising results, achieving 87% of the performance of cloud-only models while incurring just 3.3% of the cloud costs. However, challenges such as handling lengthy documents and complex tasks remain, as small LMs struggle with long contexts and multi-step instructions.

Enhanced Protocol: MinionS

To address these issues, the enhanced MinionS protocol was developed. This sophisticated approach employs a decomposition-execution-aggregation loop to optimize the performance of small LMs. The protocol boasts a 97.9% accuracy compared to remote-only solutions while reducing costs to 17.5%.

Future Prospects and Applications

As GPUs become more prevalent in consumer devices, Minions offer a viable solution for distributing AI workloads, reducing dependency on expensive cloud APIs. The protocol is particularly useful in fields such as financial analysis, medical reasoning, and scientific research, where data-intensive tasks are common.

Minions represent a significant step towards integrating AI more deeply into everyday technology, potentially revolutionizing how AI workloads are managed and executed. The ongoing development and application of MinionS could pave the way for more efficient, cost-effective AI solutions across various industries.
