The IOTA Foundation has concluded a dynamic Q4 2024, marked by extensive developments across its departments, driven significantly by the IOTA Rebased protocol update. Following a successful community vote, the transition from the Rebased Testnet to the Mainnet is anticipated for 2025, according to the IOTA Foundation Blog.

Research & Development

In Q4 2024, IOTA's R&D teams focused on aligning infrastructure and developer resources to support the IOTA Rebased milestone. The Core Protocol team achieved critical milestones by stabilizing tests and launching the public Testnet. Progress was made in tokenomics, with efforts to integrate burn-slash rewards and fixed base fees into the system.

The Consensus team's work on the Starfish protocol, aimed at improving consensus mechanisms, continued with key components tested in the testbed. Protocol research centered on enhancing decentralization and efficiency, setting the stage for a more scalable network in 2025.

L1 and L2 Smart Contracts

The L1 Smart Contracts team reached 100% test coverage for JSON-RPC endpoints and resolved significant bugs. The release of the IOTA Move VSCode Plugin marked a milestone in improving developer experience. The L2 Smart Contracts team implemented the gas concept and refined the Consensus module, ensuring ISC's seamless operation on the IOTA Rebased network.

Developer Experience and Tooling

The Developer Experience team focused on enhancing documentation and developer tools to facilitate Move adoption. Key achievements included updating Testnet launch documentation and engaging developers through interactive challenges. The Tooling team released the IOTA Explorer, Wallet, and TypeScript SDK, preparing them for production readiness.

Product Adoption and Trust Framework

The Product Adoption department, formerly Technology Adoption, aims to demonstrate the practical utility of public DLT in solving real-world challenges. The Trust Framework Team successfully launched IOTA Identity for IOTA Rebased and plans to deliver further product developments.

Collaborations and Ecosystem Growth

IOTA's collaborations with partners like Impierce, Orobo, and ETO Gruppe advanced significantly, emphasizing the ecosystem's growth. The Trade Logistics and Information Pipeline (TLIP) achieved key milestones, including integrating with Kenyan government agencies to enhance trade efficiency.

Legal & Regulatory Affairs

The Legal and Regulatory Affairs department engaged with European regulatory authorities, contributing to DeFi report development and participating in the Blockchain4Europe Annual Summit. They also collaborated on self-regulation proposals for DeFi, focusing on compliance and risk mitigation.

Outlook for 2025

As IOTA Rebased prepares for Mainnet release, the foundation aims to launch production-grade tooling and documentation. The focus will be on growth initiatives, developer collaborations, and real-world adoption driven by the Product Adoption team.
