IOTA (MIOTA) Initiates Governance Vote on Rebased Protocol Upgrade

The IOTA Foundation has officially commenced the Voting Open phase for the governance vote on the proposed Rebased protocol upgrade as of December 2, 2024, according to the IOTA Foundation Blog. This pivotal vote invites IOTA (MIOTA) token holders to partake in a decision that could significantly influence the future trajectory of IOTA's protocol development.

Proposal for Rebased Protocol

The governance proposal suggests upgrading the IOTA L1 Mainnet to the new Rebased protocol. Token holders can cast their votes using the IOTA Firefly or Bloom wallets. Should the proposal pass, it would introduce several groundbreaking features to the IOTA Mainnet, currently tested on the IOTA Rebased Testnet.

Key features of the proposed upgrade include the introduction of move-based smart contracts on a parallelized Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based L1 ledger, full decentralization via a delegated proof of stake mechanism featuring 150 permissionless validator slots, and a transition to the Mysticeti protocol, which promises high scalability with transaction speeds exceeding 50,000 transactions per second (TPS) and subsecond finality.

The upgrade also aims to reduce transaction fees through an adaptive fee burn mechanism, facilitating a flexible supply model. Additionally, sponsored transactions are proposed to enhance user experience by abstracting transaction fees away from users. Token holders would also have the opportunity to earn staking rewards, with an initial target inflation of 6-7% per year, potentially yielding 10-15% annual percentage yield (APY).

Voting Timeline and Implications

The governance vote is structured over a 14-day period. The initial Voting Open Phase will last from December 2 to December 9, followed by a Counting Phase from December 9 to December 16. If the community endorses the proposal, the IOTA network will undergo the proposed upgrades.

Conversely, if the proposal is rejected, the network will continue its operations in its current state, and the IOTA Foundation will reassess its development and stewardship strategies for the network.

For those interested in participating, a comprehensive guide to the voting process is available on the IOTA wiki, providing detailed instructions on how to engage in this governance decision.
