NVIDIA Introduces Halos: A Comprehensive Safety System for Autonomous Vehicles

NVIDIA has announced the launch of NVIDIA Halos, a robust safety system designed for autonomous vehicles (AVs). This initiative integrates NVIDIA's full suite of automotive hardware, software, and AI research to enhance safety from cloud to car, according to NVIDIA's blog.

Comprehensive Approach to Safety

Halos is structured to provide a holistic approach to safety across three main levels: technology, development, and computation. The system encompasses platform, algorithmic, and ecosystem safety, and includes design-time, deployment-time, and validation-time safeguards. It leverages powerful computing platforms such as NVIDIA DGX for AI training, Omniverse and Cosmos for simulation, and DRIVE AGX for deployment.

Riccardo Mariani, Vice President of Industry Safety at NVIDIA, emphasized Halos' role in empowering partners to create unique, safe AV solutions, potentially accelerating standardization and regulatory compliance.

AI Systems Inspection Lab

The AI Systems Inspection Lab serves as an entry point for automakers and developers, allowing them to verify the safe integration of their products with NVIDIA technology. This lab, accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board, integrates functional safety, cybersecurity, and AI safety into a unified framework. Key participants include Ficosa, OMNIVISION, onsemi, and Continental.

Key Elements of Halos

Halos is founded on three core areas: platform safety, algorithmic safety, and ecosystem safety. Platform safety features a safety-assessed system-on-a-chip (SoC) with integrated safety mechanisms and the NVIDIA DriveOS, a safety-certified operating system. Algorithmic safety includes libraries and APIs for safety data handling, and a rich training and simulation environment using NVIDIA Omniverse and Cosmos. Ecosystem safety involves diverse datasets and safe deployment workflows to ensure ongoing safety improvements.

Safety Track Record

NVIDIA's commitment to safety is demonstrated through extensive research and development efforts, including over 15,000 engineering years invested in vehicle safety and more than 1,000 AV-safety patents filed. Recent certifications include the ISO 26262 ASIL D standard conformance for NVIDIA DriveOS 6.0 and the ISO/SAE 21434 Cybersecurity Process certification.

This comprehensive safety framework positions NVIDIA at the forefront of AV safety, aiming to foster innovation while ensuring reliability and security in autonomous driving technologies.
