Paramount's Ex-CTO Phil Wiser on AI's 'iPhone Moment' and Media's Future

Phil Wiser, Paramount’s former Chief Technology Officer, has seen technology redefine industries firsthand—from the rise of MP3s to AI’s current disruption. Speaking at the 2026 Runway AI Summit in New York City, Wiser described artificial intelligence as a top-five transformational technology, comparing its impact to foundational innovations like the printing press and the steam engine.

Wiser, who stepped down from Paramount in May 2026 after a seven-year tenure, has spent his career navigating disruptive tech waves. At Paramount, he spearheaded AI adoption, supported the growth of platforms like Paramount+ and Pluto TV, and modernized enterprise systems. His perspective on AI is clear: it could reshape creative industries and knowledge work with unprecedented speed.

AI: A 'Top-Five' Technology Shift

For Wiser, AI belongs to a rare category of innovations that fundamentally lower the cost of human labor. “This is rapidly decompressing the cost of some forms of knowledge work,” he said, pointing to the multi-trillion-dollar investments flowing into AI as validation of its transformative power. He warned that industries resistant to AI risk being blindsided—much like how the music industry faltered during the Napster era.

AI’s defining breakthrough, however, may still be on the horizon. Wiser likened the current stage of AI to the pre-iPhone era of mobile technology. While tools like ChatGPT have captured public attention, he believes the true "iPhone moment"—a product that unlocks mass adoption—has yet to arrive.

Balancing Speed and Strategy

Wiser emphasized that businesses must act swiftly but strategically to avoid missing AI’s narrowing adoption window. While past tech revolutions like streaming video took decades to mature, the AI wave could be compressed into just 5-10 years—or even less. “Getting it right means you’re going to miss the window,” he said, cautioning against overanalysis at the expense of action.

At Paramount, Wiser focused on enabling grassroots experimentation with AI, equipping employees with tools like Runway and fostering internal communities to share successes. His mantra: “Never lead with the technology. Start with what someone couldn’t do before and engineer the ‘aha’ moment.”

Creative Disruption: Threat or Opportunity?

Addressing fears of AI replacing human creativity, Wiser argued that tools don’t dictate content quality. “Is the machine forcing you to make bad content? No. Creative license is still in your hands.” He compared AI’s potential to democratize content creation to the era when artists were first freed from needing record labels for studio time and distribution.

However, he acknowledged the disruption could destabilize traditional creative hierarchies in media. “Those with ideas and vision will be accelerated,” he noted, suggesting that the shift might upend the status quo but ultimately empower creators.

Lessons for the Next Generation

Looking ahead, Wiser encouraged young technologists to focus on building, not just theorizing. “Any young person should go and live in a startup for some amount of time,” he advised, underscoring the urgency of engaging with AI now. “The time is now.”

Wiser’s tenure at Paramount cemented his reputation as a transformative leader in media technology. As AI continues to reshape industries, his insights offer a roadmap for navigating this critical inflection point.
