SEI Holders Must Bridge IBC Assets Now as Network Kills Cosmos Support
Sei Network just put a clock on its Cosmos-native assets. The blockchain's v6.4 upgrade, deployed this week, includes the technical capability to permanently disable inbound IBC transfers—and holders of affected tokens need to move fast.
The assets at risk: USDCet (Wormhole USDC from Ethereum), USDCop (Wormhole USDC from Optimism), USDTbs, ATOM, and WBTC. Once a follow-on governance proposal passes, these Cosmos-native tokens become permanently stranded on Sei with no way to bridge them out.
Why Sei Is Cutting IBC
This isn't a surprise move—it's the endgame of SIP-3, Sei's ongoing transition to a fully EVM-only architecture. The network has been systematically shedding its Cosmos heritage to position itself as what the team calls the "Decentralized NASDAQ," optimized purely for Ethereum-compatible trading applications.
SEI traded at $0.0546 on April 17, up 5.06% in 24 hours, with a market cap of $367 million. The price action suggests markets aren't panicking over the migration deadline—yet. But that could change if the governance vote catches unprepared holders off guard.
What You Need to Do
The recommended action is straightforward but time-sensitive: bridge affected assets back to their origin chains using Skip:Go or the relevant bridge interface (Wormhole for Wormhole-wrapped tokens).
DeFi users face an extra step. If you've supplied any of these assets to lending protocols or liquidity pools on Sei, you need to unwind those positions first. Withdraw, then bridge. Failure to do so before the governance change passes means those supplied assets could become permanently inaccessible.
Sei's team hasn't announced a specific deadline, directing users to monitor @Sei_Labs and @SeiNetwork on X for updates. That ambiguity is the real risk here—governance proposals can move faster than expected.
The Bigger Picture
This migration caps a busy period for Sei. The network's Giga upgrade went live on April 15, targeting throughput improvements that could push the chain toward its 200,000 TPS goal. A routine token unlock the same day added 55.56 million SEI to circulation.
For traders holding IBC assets on Sei, the calculus is simple: bridge now while you still can. The full migration guide lives at docs.sei.io, and the Discord remains open for questions. But waiting for the governance vote to schedule before acting is gambling with your capital.
