Sei Labs has unveiled its ambitious Giga Roadmap, which aims to significantly enhance the scalability and performance of the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM). The roadmap outlines a strategy to achieve 5 gigagas per second, a substantial increase in throughput that promises to deliver a 50x improvement over current capabilities, according to a recent announcement by Sei Labs.

The Need for EVM Scalability

The EVM has become the backbone of smart contract development, but its current infrastructure is struggling to keep pace with the increasing demand for blockchain applications. Developers face limitations due to the EVM's capacity to handle only about 100 transactions per second, which restricts the potential for creating sophisticated on-chain applications.

Sei Labs has been at the forefront of addressing these challenges. In July 2024, the company launched Sei v2, the first parallelized EVM, which has already reached several milestones, including surpassing $250 million in Total Value Locked (TVL) and onboarding 150 projects on its mainnet.

Innovative Solutions for Enhanced Performance

The Giga Roadmap outlines several innovative solutions aimed at rebuilding the EVM from the ground up. Key initiatives include the development of a new performance-optimized EVM client, intelligent parallelization to run non-conflicting transactions concurrently, and the introduction of a new encoding format to minimize processing overhead.

Furthermore, Sei Labs plans to enhance the consensus mechanism by decoupling transaction execution from consensus, allowing for asynchronous execution and multiple concurrent proposers. This approach is expected to improve network liveness and reduce latency.

Optimizing Storage and Execution

Sei's roadmap also focuses on optimizing storage to handle increased transaction volumes. This includes asynchronous state root generation and disk writes, as well as optimizing the key-value database for faster data retrieval. These improvements aim to ensure that the network can handle large amounts of data efficiently without compromising performance.

Future Prospects

Sei Labs is already making strides in these areas, with significant progress expected by the end of Q1 2025. The company is actively expanding its research and engineering teams to tackle these ambitious challenges.

As Sei Labs continues to drive innovation in blockchain infrastructure, the Giga Roadmap represents a critical step towards achieving web2 levels of throughput for EVM applications, positioning Sei as a leader in blockchain scalability solutions.
