Singapore's IMDA Launches New Programme to Boost Digital Skills

Singapore's Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has introduced a new initiative to enhance the digital skills of its citizens. The programme, dubbed as 'SG Digital Skills Programme', aims to prepare Singaporeans for the digital future by equipping them with essential digital skills.

The initiative was announced by Mr S Iswaran, Minister for Communications and Information, during the Committee of Supply (COS) debate on Friday, 26th February 2021. The programme is designed to help individuals understand and use technology confidently, thus enabling them to leverage opportunities in a digitalised world.

The SG Digital Skills Programme consists of four key components. The first component, 'Basic Digital Skills', is aimed at providing citizens with fundamental digital skills and knowledge. The second component, 'Advanced Digital Skills', focuses on more advanced digital skills required for specific job roles in the digital economy. The third component, 'Sector-specific Digital Skills', is tailored to the digital needs of specific sectors such as healthcare, finance, and logistics. The last component, 'Digital Leadership Skills', is targeted at leaders and managers to help them drive digital transformation in their organisations.

The programme is one of the many initiatives by IMDA to nurture a digitally confident workforce and society. IMDA has been working towards this goal through various initiatives such as the TechSkills Accelerator (TeSA), a multi-stakeholder initiative that aims to build and develop a skilled ICT workforce in Singapore.

IMDA's digital skills initiatives have had a significant impact on Singapore's digital transformation journey. According to a survey conducted by IMDA in 2020, 90% of Singapore residents are now online, and 8 in 10 seniors are digitally ready, thanks to various digital literacy programmes.

As Singapore continues to push forward with its digitalisation efforts, the new SG Digital Skills Programme is set to play a crucial role in equipping citizens with the necessary digital skills to thrive in a digital future.
