Stellar (XLM) Unveils Developer Preview of Private Payments

Stellar (XLM) has launched the developer preview of Stellar Private Payments (SPP), a privacy-focused tool that enables counterparty-level privacy for transactions on its blockchain. Built by Nethermind, SPP is now live on Stellar's testnet, providing developers with an opportunity to explore its capabilities before a potential mainnet rollout. The announcement comes as Stellar’s token trades at $0.196853, up 2.74% in the last 24 hours, with a market cap of $6.78 billion as of August 25, 2026.

The core innovation of SPP lies in its use of privacy pools. Users can deposit funds into a shared pool, where transactions occur privately. On the public ledger, only the pool activity is visible, while the identities of counterparties and transaction amounts remain hidden. This makes SPP particularly suitable for sensitive use cases like B2B payments and donations. Notably, SPP differs from Stellar’s Confidential Tokens, which conceal transfer amounts but not sender and receiver identities.

How Stellar Private Payments Work

SPP uses a zero-knowledge proof system, specifically Groth16, to ensure transactions remain private while maintaining compliance. When funds are deposited into the pool, they generate cryptographic commitments stored in a Merkle tree. Transfers within the pool spend these commitments and create new ones, while a nullifier ensures no double-spending. Withdrawals move funds back to the public ledger, tying the process together.

For example, a deposit of 5 XLM would show as a positive balance on the ledger, while a private transfer within the pool would leave no visible trace of the transaction’s recipient or amount. Withdrawals, similarly, appear as negative balances without linking to prior deposits. This "public in, private middle, public out" structure is designed to balance privacy with transparency.

Compliance and Customization

Stellar emphasizes that SPP is built with compliance in mind. The platform features an Association Set Provider (ASP) model that supports block-lists, allow-lists, or a combination of both to meet regulatory requirements. Additionally, administrators can use global view keys to monitor in-pool transactions for compliance purposes, while users can selectively disclose specific transaction details.

SPP’s design also benefits from recent upgrades to the Stellar network, including Protocol 25 (X-Ray) and Protocol 26 (Yardstick), which introduced cryptographic host functions for efficient on-chain verification. These enhancements make privacy solutions like SPP more resource-efficient and decentralized.

Market and Developer Implications

SPP is not yet production-ready and remains a proof-of-concept tool for developers. However, its introduction signals Stellar’s increasing focus on privacy as a competitive differentiator. Privacy pools, particularly when combined with compliance features, could attract institutional users looking for secure, scalable, and privacy-preserving blockchain solutions.

For developers, the SPP testnet offers multiple integration options, including a prebuilt WebAssembly SDK and a command-line interface for testing.
